O2 Bartender asked:

I thought I heard that the manufacturing of the hybrid system including it’s batteries does more damage in the long run than a regular car. The batteries also go through a long manufacturing process as they must be shipped to various places around the world.

Some cars in the early 90s like the civic, geo metro, etc got 50mpg or more. Howcome almost 20 years later, our hybrid technology is not able to significantly outperform these vehicles?

I’ve never driven a hybrid before and I’m wondering, how does a hybrid car exactly word? Do I drive ti exactly as a normal car? Do I put gas in it? Do I put water in it? Whats maintenence like? it has a “ECVT transmission” –what does this mean? Ive heard hybrids turn off on traffic lights and dont sit idle?.. Does this mean I will have to start my engine over and over again, or have trouble at traffic lights?? Please give me all details!

Matt Alexander asked:

I’ve read that newer hybrid cars like the Volt will run on a pure electrical engine for distances of 40 miles or so and then switch to a traditional gasoline engine after that threshold has been reached. However, it’s bad for gas to sit unused in an engine for an extended period of time. If one of these cars is only used for 20 mile commutes over a period of several months, is there any system in place to deal with the fact that whatever gasoline is in there will go unused for long periods of time?

Take the following into consideration….
How are you going to legislate this in a free country addicted to cars? Also can the auto manufacturers actually build that many hybrids? Also hybrids require large battery cells, what about their disposal later? Also, not every hybrid does a good job on gas mileage?

When you first heard of the concept of hybrid cars, what was your reaction? Did you think they were actually going to be invented or think they were just another crazy idea? Did you think they would become so ingrained in our society?

For my debate class, I need to talk about why every major car company shouldn’t make their own hybrid model.
I need some expert opinions.
