I was just wondering has everyone forgot the beating that opec put on the world by abandoning energy conservation. In january crude oil was at $35 per barrel and here we are over 5months later and oil is heading towards $70.OPEC says it is due to ”increasing demand”which is utterly ridiculous because we are in a global economic cash crisis and people are losing their jobs like crazy, vehicles getting repossessed,gm on the verge of bankruptcy, carpooling, etc. So that has to mean that the world has forgotten the $147.50 beating that opec put on everyone and abandon energy conservation because from $35 to nearly $70 in less than 6 months.I estimate at this rate crude will be back to $147.50 per barrel by or before sept 2010,unless the world gets serious about continually doing ”going green energy conservation methods. Also why has everyone abandon the energy saving light bulbs.I paid $4 a piece for my bulbs and they save me over $70 per month on my electricity compared to the soft white bulbs, plus they last for up to 2years(I already had mines for 9months now and they are still going strong). So why has every abandon these methods?,because it shows through the price of crude oil.

OPEC had a big effect in the 1970s, by cutting off supplies. I remember most gas stations closed and blocks long lines at every open station. But now we don’t see shortages, just high prices. That is supply and demand. All the new demand is in China and India. A billion people who can afford a car now that could not afford one 10 or 20 years ago is the cause of the high prices. China has already passed the United States as the #1 emitter of carbon dioxide and they are still growing fast.

I turned all my lights on for earth day and let my car idle. For all the energy conservation that can be done our economy is based on oil and there is no meaningful way to get beyond that. That’s why we should be drilling like crazy for oil now and should have been 10 years ago.

I find this extremely puzzling myself. Energy efficiency has huge potential benefits. Switching to existing high-efficiency electrical technology would create savings equivalent to adding 30% more generating capacity in the U.S. and save us money in the bargain.
A part of the problem is the perception that efficiency means sacrifice – freezing in the dark as the leftover propaganda would have it. Wider dissemination of information that lives and bottom lines can be improved by energy efficiency will certainly help.

    – i have quite a few of those bulbs. i didn’t throw them out, just because oil got cheaper.

    – i have a car that gets better gas mileage. i didn’t sell it and get a hummer, just because gas got cheaper.

    – i use the a/c less than i did a number of years ago.

    – i have a new roof, that seems to be a bit cooler. i didn’t tear it off, and put the old one back on.

quite clearly, oil is going to go up more in summer, when more people are driving.
over a number of years, the price will surely increase.
however, it’s not a consistent increase.
oil will probably not be $147 a barrel by September, 2010.
    but it could.

i thought about buying a hybrid, but (A) a good deal on a little saturn fell into my lap, and (B) i expect that in 5 years, the hybrid technology will be far better than it is today.

remember all those SUVs sitting unsold in car lots?
go look again — they’re all still there.
we’ve not gone back to our old ways.
