Can I keep my permanent residence status eventhough I will probably be out of the US for a long time?

You need to continue to pay taxes in the US and need to enter the US at least once every 11 months and 28 days. Also you will need to keep some type of residency in the US and if not it can be argued that you no longer reside in the US.
Best thing to do is contact an Immigration Attorney who would be better able to advise you.
well, staying outside usa longer than 6 months will mean that you lose your green card!! there is nothing to do about that. but you also can talk to them (uscis and homeland security agents) and they will solve your questions.
visit there is a bunch of useful information in that site.
good luck!! take the best decision!!!!

Once you are away from the US for 6 months you lose your green card. Permanent resident means just that.
